Common paver patio mistakes include choosing a patio that's too small, ignoring drainage, skipping proper base preparation and failing to install edge restraints. Poor material choices and inadequate planning can also create problems after construction. A clear layout and sound installation plan help prevent costly corrections.
1. Building a patio that's too small
A patio needs enough room for furniture, walking paths and the activities you plan to enjoy. Sketch out tables, chairs and cooking areas before deciding on the dimensions. Leave enough space for people to move around without squeezing between furniture and walls.
2. Ignoring drainage
Water should drain away from the house and should not pool on the patio. Charleston's heavy rain and varied soil conditions make drainage planning especially important. The correct grading and drainage solution depend on the property.
3. Skimping on base preparation
Pavers need a properly excavated and compacted base suited to the soil and intended use. Inadequate preparation can contribute to settling, uneven surfaces and shifting joints. Ask your contractor how base materials and depth will be selected for your site.
4. Choosing the wrong paver color
Paver samples can look different outdoors than they do in a showroom or on a screen. View samples in natural light and consider how they work with your home's exterior, roof and surrounding landscape. Darker surfaces can also become hot in direct sun, depending on the material and conditions.
5. Leaving out edge restraints
Edge restraints help hold the outside pavers in place and resist sideways movement. Without suitable edge support, the edges can spread and joints may open. The right restraint depends on the layout, materials and installation conditions.
6. Forgetting future features
If you may add a pergola, outdoor kitchen, fire pit or seating wall later, plan those locations before construction. Utilities, footings, clearances and drainage may need preparation before the patio is installed. Planning early can reduce the need to remove finished pavers later.
7. Comparing estimates by price alone
A lower estimate may include different materials or leave out important work. Compare excavation, base preparation, pavers, edging, joint sand, drainage and cleanup across written estimates. Confirm warranty coverage and exclusions before signing.
