Mortar-set brick patios and borders in Charleston, SC

Mortar-set brick is brick laid in mortar over a solid slab or base. It is the classic Charleston look for courtyards, patios, borders and steps. We design the pattern in 3D, so you can compare herringbone, running bond and borders before we start.

What to know about brick and mortar-set work

What mortar-set brick typically costs

$25 to $50 per square foot installed

Brick on an existing sound slab costs less than brick on a new base. Herringbone patterns, border detailing, raised edges and tight access all add cost.

What is included

  • A design with pattern and border options shown in 3D
  • Slab inspection, or a new compacted base
  • Brick cut and set in mortar
  • Border or soldier-course detailing

Materials

We work with new clay brick in a range of colors and finishes. Matching older brick is a matter of sampling; we can usually get close on color and texture. We compare brick options next to your house, walls and other materials.

What we plan for around Charleston

  • Historic courtyards where new brick has to sit alongside old
  • Older slabs that may be cracked or too thin to support mortar-set brick
  • Humidity and moisture, which make drainage and sealing choices important
  • Historic-district review for work visible from the street

Questions about brick and mortar-set work

What is the difference between mortar-set brick and paver brick?

Mortar-set brick is bonded to a rigid slab with mortar, so the surface is solid with tight joints. Paver brick sits on a flexible sand and stone base and can be reset. We recommend one or the other based on your site.
