A workmanship warranty covers the quality of the installation, while a manufacturer warranty covers the pavers themselves. Both matter, and they cover different problems. Our 10-year workmanship warranty is on every paver install, and the written terms are what define exactly what it covers.
What is the difference between a manufacturer warranty and a workmanship warranty?
•Manufacturer warranty: comes from the company that makes the pavers. It typically addresses defects in the product itself, such as problems with the material. Terms vary by manufacturer and product line.
•Workmanship warranty: comes from the contractor. It covers problems caused by how the patio was installed, such as a poorly compacted base, uneven settling or bad edge restraint.
If a paver is defective, the manufacturer is the one to call. If the patio settles because the base was done wrong, that is a workmanship issue.
What does a workmanship warranty usually cover?
•Settling or sinking caused by base preparation or compaction.
•Pavers shifting or separating because of installation errors.
•Edge restraint failures.
•Drainage or grading problems created by the install.
Exact coverage depends on the written terms, so read them before you sign.
What is usually not covered?
•Normal wear and fading: sun, weather and age change the look of pavers over time.
•Stains and surface damage: oil, rust, chemicals and heavy impacts.
•Damage from misuse: loads the patio was not built for.
•Outside causes: tree roots, flooding, storms, leaking pipes or ground movement unrelated to the install.
•Maintenance: joint sand, cleaning, sealing and weed control are the owner's responsibility. Patio maintenance is a separate paid service and is not included with an install.
Why do the length and written terms matter?
A long warranty is only useful if it is clear. Look for what is covered, what is excluded, how to file a claim, and whether it stays with the home if you sell. A verbal promise is hard to enforce. A written warranty from a contractor who will still be around in ten years is worth more than a longer one from a company that may not be.
Ask for the document before you book, and keep a copy with your records.
How do Lowcountry conditions affect warranty claims?
On James Island and across the Lowcountry, sandy soils can shift, clay swells and shrinks, and heavy summer rain and high water tables soften the ground. These conditions are why a proper base and drainage matter, and why workmanship is where most patio problems start. Good site prep reduces the chance you will ever need to make a claim.
What should you ask any contractor about a warranty?
•How long is the workmanship warranty?
•Is it in writing, and can I see it?
•What is covered and what is excluded?
•How do I make a claim?
•Does it transfer if I sell the house?
Frequently asked questions
•Does the warranty cover fading?
Usually not. Fading from sun and age is normal wear and is not an installation defect.
•Does the warranty include maintenance?
No. Maintenance such as soft washing, re-sanding and sealing is a separate service.
•Do I need to keep records?
Yes. Keep your contract, warranty and receipts.
