Paver Patio Pool Extension and Brick Staircase in Mount Pleasant, SC

Paver Patio Pool Extension and Brick Staircase in Mount Pleasant, SC

A homeowner in the Carolina Park neighborhood of Mount Pleasant reached out with a pool patio that had gotten too small for how the family actually used the space. They wanted more room around the pool, a refresh on the existing patio and staircases, and a fix for a front entry that hadn't aged well. We handled all three as one project.

The Plan

The scope broke into three parts: extend the existing pool patio, clean up and resand the original paver area, and rebuild the front steps. Because the homeowner wanted the new pool patio section to match the old one, material selection and color matching mattered as much as layout.

Materials

We went with Belgard Kiawah pavers for the pool patio extension. Kiawah has a tumbled, worn-in look that blends well with an existing installation instead of looking like a patch job, which was important since we were tying new pavers into roughly 2,000 square feet of patio and staircases that were already there.

Restoring the Existing Patio

Before we touched the new section, we power washed and resanded the full 2,000 square feet of existing patio and staircases. Pavers in the Charleston area take a beating between pool splash, pollen, humidity, and heavy summer rain, and joint sand washes out or gets overrun with weeds over time. Cleaning and resanding brought the old patio back close to its original look and gave us a consistent surface to extend from. This maintenance work was handled as its own service, separate from the new paver install.

The Front Steps

The last piece of the project was the front entry. The old front steps had reached the end of their life, so we tore them out completely and rebuilt them as mortar-set brick. Mortar-set work is a different install method than the dry-laid pavers on the patio, more rigid and better suited to a formal entry step where you want a tight, permanent joint rather than sand-swept lines.

The Finished Result

The homeowner ended up with a pool patio that's bigger and functions as one continuous space instead of an original section and an obvious addition. The existing patio and staircases look refreshed instead of worn, and the new brick front steps give the entry a cleaner, more finished look than what was there before. Every paver we installed on this project, including the pool patio extension, is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
