This Johns Island homeowner wanted a patio that could handle regular hosting, something big enough for a crowd but with enough visual interest that it didn't look like one flat slab of concrete. The site called for a 600 square foot paver patio, and we worked with them on a layout that mixes materials instead of using just one.

The Plan
We split the 600 square feet into two halves, each with its own paver so the space reads as two connected zones rather than one big rectangle. A black Holland Stone border ties the whole patio together and gives it a clean, finished edge. As with every project, this one started with a free on-site visit and three price points for the same layout at different material levels, so the homeowner could see their options before committing.
Materials
Half the patio is laid in Techo-Bloc's Blu 60, a paver with a tight, contemporary look that holds up well in the Lowcountry heat and humidity. The other half uses Industria slabs, which are larger format and give that section a more open, modern feel. Running a black Belgard Holland Stone border around the perimeter frames both materials and keeps the transition between them looking intentional instead of patched together.
The Challenge and How We Solved It
Combining two different paver styles on one patio takes careful planning before a single paver goes down. Johns Island sites often have a mix of sandy and clay soil, and getting the base compacted evenly under both the Blu 60 and the larger Industria slabs matters for how the patio performs over time, especially with the heavy rain we get here in the summer. We built out a proper base across the full 600 square feet first, then set each material to the same finished height so the two sections meet flush at the border line. That's what keeps the patio looking seamless as it settles in over the coming seasons and not shifting or cracking at the seams.
The Finished Result
The finished patio gives the homeowners two distinct spaces in one footprint, room to set up furniture on one side and keep an open area on the other, all framed by that black Holland Stone edge. It's a patio built for entertaining, which is exactly what they asked for. Like every paver install we do, this one comes with two years of free maintenance and a five-year workmanship warranty, so they can host without worrying about upkeep in year one.
