Paver Patio Rebuild in North Charleston | Two-Tier Design

This North Charleston homeowner came to us with a paver patio that had run its course. The old pavers were cracked, sinking, and shifting in spots, and the space didn't do much to welcome anyone into the backyard. They wanted a patio that felt like an entrance, somewhere people would actually want to walk through on their way to a get-together, not just a slab out back.

We designed a two-tier patio with three steps connecting the levels. The layout gave the backyard a sense of arrival instead of just dumping guests straight onto one flat surface. Every project starts with a free design and build estimate, so before any demo began, the homeowner had a 3D design to walk through and three price points to choose from at different material levels.

We built the main patio surface with Techo-Bloc Villagio. The border is a 4-course pattern using two rows of chocolate and two rows of chestnut, with a shale grey field filling in the interior. That contrast gives the patio a defined edge without looking busy.

For the walls, we used Belgard wall block, capped with Techo-Bloc Chestnut bullnose on every wall ledge. The bullnose cap ties the wall color back into the chestnut border on the patio, so the whole space reads as one design instead of two separate projects stacked together.

The Challenge and How We Solved It. Tearing out an old, failing paver patio always means dealing with whatever is underneath it, and North Charleston's mix of sandy and clay soils can shift over time, which is often why patios like this one start to fail in the first place. We demoed the old patio completely and rebuilt the base from scratch, so the new two-tier system has the support it needs to handle heavy summer rain.

Adding the steps between tiers also meant getting the grade right so water moves off the patio instead of pooling near the house. Getting that base and drainage work right up front is what keeps a patio like this looking good for years instead of five. The Finished Result The finished patio does what the homeowner wanted from the start: it gives their backyard a real entrance. The steps guide you down through the tiers, the chocolate and chestnut border frames the shale grey field, and the wall caps tie the whole space together. It's built for hosting, with room to move between levels instead of everyone bunched up on one slab.

Every paver install we do, including this one, comes with a 10-year workmanship warranty, so the homeowner doesn't have to think about it for a while. Thinking About a Patio Like This?
