Plantation Mix Walkway & Patio Project in Mount Pleasant

Plantation Mix Walkway & Patio Project in Mount Pleasant

This Mount Pleasant homeowner had a courtyard and walkway system that had been patched together for over 20 years. Different brick, different stone, different eras of work, all butted up against each other with no real plan. They wanted it to finally look like one space instead of a collection of repairs.

The Starting Point

The existing walkway covered close to 2,000 square feet, and none of it matched. Over two decades, sections had been replaced piecemeal with whatever material was available at the time, so the courtyard had four or five different looks fighting each other. The homeowners liked the idea of a full paver patio replacement, but they were upfront that redoing all of it in pavers or concrete wasn't in the budget.

Working Out a Plan That Fit the Budget

We talked through options during the free design and build estimate, which is standard on every project we quote. That includes an on-site visit and three price points for the same scope of work, so homeowners can see what different material levels actually cost before committing to anything.

One of those options was plantation mix, a compacted stone surface that's common on historic Lowcountry properties but new territory for a lot of homeowners. Their first reaction was no. Loose rock sounded like something that would scatter, wash out, or need constant upkeep.

Why Plantation Mix Made Sense Here

Plantation mix isn't loose gravel once it's installed correctly. Properly graded and compacted, it locks together and functions as a hard surface, similar to how a paver base works underneath a patio, except it's also the finished walking surface. That makes it a practical way to cover a lot of square footage without the cost of pavers or concrete across the whole footprint.

In Charleston's sandy and clay soils, compaction and grading matter even more than the material itself. Get that wrong and any surface, plantation mix included, will shift or pool water during our summer downpours. Get it right and it holds up and drains the way it should.

Once we walked them through how it compacts and performs, and showed them what it looks like on similar Lowcountry properties, they were on board. It also let us reserve the reclaimed material for where it would have the most impact.

The Reclaimed Brick

For the courtyard and key walkway sections, we used reclaimed brick salvaged from an 1800s Chicago factory. That brick has the wear and color variation that new material can't fake, and pairing it with the plantation mix let us tie the whole 2,000 square feet together without pricing the project out of reach.

The Finished Result

What used to be a patchwork of mismatched materials now reads as one courtyard. The reclaimed brick anchors the main walkway and gathering areas, and the plantation mix carries the rest of the footprint at a fraction of the cost of full paver coverage. As with every paver install we do, this project comes with two years of free maintenance and a five-year workmanship warranty.
